How is an audiometric examination performed?
Through an audiometric examination, it is possible to detect and quantify a patient's hearing capacity.
Communication kits are usually employed, including headphones for the patient and a microphone for the specialist doctor, to be connected to the audiometer. The type of examination used is air conduction (tones sent to the auditory nerve and cochlea via the external ear using headphones) or bone conduction (tones sent to the cochlea through cranial bone vibration).
With HORENTEK Hekto audiometers, the use of soundproof booths is not necessary; rather, a modern device that can be connected via USB to your computer allows you to manage the entire audiological examination through user-friendly patient management software. Of Italian manufacture and available in various models, it reaches full audiometry functionality, such as Air Conduction, Bone Conduction, Masking, HUGHSON-Westlake Test, Free Field Test with optional pre-calibrated speakers, Speech Audiometry with pre-calibrated bisyllabic word lists in three languages, and Free Speech Audiometry.
Audiometric masking is performed with white noise and serves to exclude the better ear not being tested: in fact, the tone or sound sent to the deaf ear would stimulate the better ear, preventing a correct assessment of the hearing threshold of the poorer ear. The Hughson-Westlake test requires 2/3 (or 3/5) correct perception of a tone that automatically decreases by 10 dB or increases by 5 dB.
The Free Field Test is conducted in a soundproof environment or soundproof booth containing pre-calibrated amplifiers in order to check the patient's hearing.
In speech audiometry, the patient's correct perception of recorded words and sentences is established.
