What is a blood centrifuge used for?

Centrifuges allow for the separation of blood components: 55% plasma (composed of water, proteins, albumin, fibrinogen, coagulation factors, antibodies, lipids, glucose, amino acids, ions, and waste substances) from the hematocrit, which is composed of 44% red blood cells and the remaining 1% (white blood cells—neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, lymphocytes—and platelets).
The yellow-colored plasma represents the fluid portion, while the remaining formed elements settle at the bottom of the test tube.
Thanks to centrifuges, the use of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) offers several advantages over classic therapies, and its contribution of growth factors makes it one of the most promising areas of research in surgery. The use of autologous biological material limits the possibility of rejection and substantially speeds up the post-operative course. The treatment has no side effects for the patient, provided that its preparation complies with the quality and safety requirements imposed by regulations. Methods based on the use of platelet-rich plasma have been developed since the 1970s and represent one of the most promising branches of research, especially regarding tissue regeneration. Already widely used for the treatment of burn victims, PRP-based methods have today expanded their field of application into various specific areas.
