Prothrombin measurement is essential to verify the effectiveness of coagulation and quantify the time required for coagulation, while also establishing the functioning of oral anticoagulant medication in case of therapy. The parameter can be expressed in seconds or as an INR ratio, an acronym for International Normalized Ratio, which is optimal for obtaining an accurate result that is independent of any potential diagnostic differences between laboratories, useful for patients taking anticoagulant drugs who suffer from liver diseases and/or hemostasis disorders.
The PT (Prothrombin Time) parameter expresses the time required for coagulation in a range of a few seconds.

Modern portable coagulometers are by definition small and lightweight, suitable for direct use by the patient. For example, the MicroINR Coagulometer, using a small blood sample, can easily determine the I.N.R. through a double quality control: one to verify the sample channel, the other for determining the control at a known level on a dedicated channel. The reagent used for the INR determination consists of human recombinant thromboplastin with an ISI (International Sensitivity Index) value of 1, guaranteeing high sensitivity and accuracy of results. An analytical quality control is present on every strip.
