An autoclave sterilizes surgical instruments using saturated pressurized steam: the increase in pressure and temperature destroys microorganisms in rapid, certified timeframes. Sterilization classes according to the EN 13060 standard
The Class B Autoclaves (Big) sterilize any category of load—solids, porous items, pouched instruments, textiles, and hollow bodies—just as in hospitals, and are also recommended for aesthetic centers. Class N Autoclaves (Naked) process only solid, non-hollow, and non-pouched instruments to be used immediately without storage. Class S Autoclaves (Specified) are the middle ground: they sterilize loads specified by the manufacturer, excluding hollow bodies.
How to choose the right class
The choice depends on the load to be sterilized: solids without cavities, type A hollow items (deep and narrow spaces) or type B (shallow but wide), and porous items that retain air and moisture. If you sterilize pouched instruments for storage or hollow handpieces, a Class B is required; for forceps and solid instruments to be reused immediately, a Class N is sufficient.
