Ultrasound transducers or probes are capable of emitting and receiving ultrasonic waves from the tissues under investigation: the received echo is converted into an electrical signal and reproduced on the ultrasound system's LCD screen, ultimately generating an anatomical image.
Probes have different surfaces depending on the anatomical region and are divided into convex, linear, and endocavitary probes (unlike the first two, the endocavitary probe is inserted inside the body, safely).
For example, a Convex probe is indicated for deep anatomy and gynecological, obstetric, pediatric, abdominal, vascular, and urological examinations. A Linear probe is used for more superficial exams such as vascular, pediatric, small organ (e.g., thyroid), musculoskeletal, orthopedic, and neurological studies.
A transvaginal endocavitary probe is used for gynecological and obstetric check-ups for women, while the transrectal endocavitary probe is used in urology. The micro-convex probe is used for morphological study of the heart or in pediatrics, while a phased-array probe is designed for echocardiography, both morphological and functional, with a complete study of the heart chambers (atria and ventricles), mitral valve, tricuspid and aortic valves, and in general to highlight pathologies, insufficiency, and valvular regurgitation.
Every ultrasound probe has technical specifications such as length, frequency range, and scanning depth: typically, a high frequency is indicated for ultrasound scans of superficial tissues and organs, while a low frequency is used for deeper structures.
